Voyages
At age 23 he sailed to the New World with his first cousin. Back then the Western Hemisphere was called the New World. In 1568 Drake went with his cousin again to but the boat was trapped by Spaniards in the Mexican port of San Juan de Ulua but then escaped. After the defeat in San Juan de Ulua, Drake vowed to get revenge. So he went back in 1570 and 1571. In 1572 he went on his first major independent voyage. Drake had planned an attack on the Isthmus of Panama. He left Plymouth on May 24 with 73 men. He went on his first raid late in July 1572. He captured the town and its treasure. His men noticed that Drake was bleeding from a wound. They left the treasure to save him.
Sir Francis Drake sailed around the globe from 1577 to 1580. During those times he visited the Caribbean and the Pacific, he also claimed part of California for Queen Elizabeth. Drake led the second expedition to sail around the world in a voyage lasting from 1577 to 1580.Queen Elizabeth I comissioned Drake to command the expedition together with John Winter and Thomas Doughty. They left Plymouth, England, on December 13, 1577, with six ships (including the Golden Hind). They sailed to Brazil with the six Ships.
Another was he went with Guillaume Le Testu on a voyage to attack a richly laden mule train. Drake and his men found that they had 20 tons of silver and gold. They buried quite a bit of the treasure because there was to much to carry. Guillaume Le Testu was wounded and later beheaded. The rest of the crew carried back as much of the silver and gold as they could. They had to go 18 miles through jungle to get back to there boat. When Drake got back to where the boats were they were gone. The men hungry, exhausted, and downhearted had no where to go and the Spanish were not far behind. They built a raft to go 10 miles to get the flagship. The men were fearing the worst. The men asked Drake how the raid had gone, Drake laughed and pulled a gold Spanish necklace from around his neck. He said "Our voyage is made lads". By August 9th 1573 they were back in Plymouth.
